Boundless Sound: Theremin Concert Hosted by Our University

The Department of Music at Hitit University's Faculty of Fine Arts, Design and Architecture, in collaboration with Vakıf 19 and the Ankara Russian Music Museum, hosted a special event entitled ‘Boundless Sound: Theremin Concert’. The Theremin, invented in 1919 by Russian physicist Lev Theremin and known as a ‘contactless musical instrument,’ was introduced to music lovers in Çorum with this concert.

The event began with an opening speech by Alper Bilan, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Vakıf 19. This was followed by a brief introduction by Aliona Palajçenko, founder of the Russian Music Museum in Ankara, who shared information about a documentary on the life of Leon Theremin, the inventor of the Theremin, which was then screened. The programme continued with Russian musician and Leon Theremin's grandson, Peter Theremin, taking to the stage to perform selections from world music using his grandfather's invention. The concert, which included selections from classical, jazz and electronic music, proceeded in the form of commentary and discussion. After the concert, Peter Theremin held a short workshop with the students, offering participants the opportunity to experience the Theremin instrument first-hand.

The event was attended by Prof. Dr. Ömer Can Satır, Head of the Music Department at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Design and Architecture at Hittite University; Alper Bilan, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Vakıf 19; Aliona Palajçenko, Founder of the Ankara Russian Music Museum; Alper Zahir, Deputy Mayor of Çorum; academics, students and art lovers.

Peter Theremin stated that he aims to promote this contactless musical instrument, invented by his grandfather, as part of his ‘Theremin Vocal’ project, which he is carrying out in different countries around the world. He said, ‘The Theremin is not just a musical instrument; it is the human body and the electromagnetic field transforming into an instrument together. In this sense, it is an art form that breaks down boundaries.
